Woodworking clubs are everywhere. However, there is at least one woodworking club that is turning heads. Do you know what it is? It’s a woodworking club that builds underground furniture for dead people. That’s right! The club is based in New Zealand, and the members build their own coffins! About 120 members of the club work together to construct coffins for themselves and others.
All of the coffins are built according to official regulations. This means that all of the coffins completed by club members are waterproof and can hold the weight of a human body. Most of the club members are over seventy years old. This means some of these coffins may be put to use very soon!
Surprisingly, the club members do not find the idea of building your own coffin to be morbid or disturbing. In fact, the people enjoy the time working together. Some of the club members even plan on displaying their finished coffins as tables or chests in their homes. However, many folks also intend to disguise their coffins with blankets and pillows before displaying the coffins prominently. They don’t want to freak people out!
It doesn’t take much to begin working on a coffin at the coffin club. A basic coffin kit costs only $170. This provides you with particle board and other materials needed to build your coffin to specifications. You also don’t need any previous woodworking experience to begin. If you can get past the idea that your bones may be inside of it for hundreds of years, a coffin is a surprisingly easy woodworking project. It can also be a labor of love for yourself and others.
Building your own coffin can make it easier to accept your own mortality. It can save your family time and money after you die, and it can also be a great way to meet new friends in the sunset years of your life.
