Helane Morrison is a trailblazer. The Brooklyn, New York born lawyer and businesswoman made her name on the West Coast of the United State. After earning a degree in Journalism from Northwestern University, she went on to study law at UC Berkley. While at UC Berkley she was the California Law Review’s editor in chief. After getting her Juris Doctor, she spent two years as a law clerk. She clerked for Appeals Court judge Richard A. Posner for a year then spent a year as as a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court judge Harry Blackmun. Morrison then joined the San Francisco based law firm Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin. In 1991 she made partner. Morrison stayed with the firm until 1996.
After leaving Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin, Helane Morrison then was hired by the Securities and Exchange Commission and became the organization’s San Francisco District Office head of regional enforcement and eventually its regional director. The job saw her taking on a number of well-known companies accused of insider trading, defrauding senior citizens, and a variety of other violations. Morrison’s position had her responsible for the Northern California, Northern Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Alaska area. She remained with the SEC for over a decade.
After Morrison left her position with the Securities and Exchange Commission, she turned her attention to business. Helane accepted a position with Hall Capital Partners LLC. Morrison worked as the company’s general counsel as well as their chief compliance officer. Hall Capital Partners LLC is a private investment company that manages the assets of some of the wealthiest families in the United States. The company is owned and run by women. Helane Morrison fit right in. Her background in law and at the SEC made her ideal for the position. Within a short time she became a managing director and an executive committee member.
Morrison’s entire career has been spent upholding the law. She’s also become a role model for many women because of her willingness to break barriers and not let her gender stop her from pursuing her career goals. She’s seen by many as a trailblazer and someone that is not afraid to challenge convention. Morrison has succeeded in business, law, and with the government and shattered many a glass ceiling along the way. She is indeed an excellent example of what’s possible for women in America.
